Preface
I was obsessed with my Dad's study room when I was little. How could he pick up some colourful and rectangular things on the shelf and lock himself in the room for the whole day? I imitated his behaviour but hardly understood anything from his accounting, economy and management books.
One day, I browsed my Dad's treasures and found one book rather fascinating. The Life of Friedrich Nietzsche by Daniel Halévy (The Chinese translation version of that book called Friedrich Nietzsche: I am the Sun《尼采传:我是太阳》) triggered me because that are the only few words I could recognise at a young age. I felt excited, like Archimedes leapt out of the bath and rushed home naked crying, "Eureka! Eureka!" I thought I had found the universal truth: the Sun is this bearded and weird-looking guy! My family made fun of me for secretly telling everyone, "do you know the Sun has a name called Ni Cai (Nietzsche's pronunciation in Chinese)?" and how I regarded myself as a detective scientist who decodes the identity of the Sun. Silly, right? That childhood mystery followed me for ages until I learnt at school what metaphor is and who the real Nietzsche is. Apparently, there is a conventional rule to name things in our society, including the Sun. My old friend' Nietzsche did not fade away with my stupidity but lingered around my life and led me to dig more about him and his fellow philosophers. As he says, he who has a why to live can bear almost any how. Like many rebellious, moody and self-centred teenagers in my adolescent years, I blamed my parents for everything because "I did not choose to be born". My early 20s were filled with enormous pains from internal self-doubt and disturbing external facts. I did not know why I was here and what is it for. I wrote numerous suicide notes in my diaries but never made them into action. I suffered from a constant existential crisis but never fell into mental illness. I do not know if I am a coward or a survivor in this life game. Now I want to share my journey of discovering my WHY (aka, my philosophy). This article is my guiding principle for my short life on earth. I hope you will find your path and live on your own terms. Flowism

Conclusion
In summary, Balaji raised a good framework that makes us consider the possibility of building a new form of country in the near future. I use China as an example to argue how we could preserve the new civilization and apply the learnings to building the network states.
To finish this essay, I'd like to quote Friedrich Hayek's saying in his book, The Fatal Conceit: The Errors of Socialism.
To finish this essay, I'd like to quote Friedrich Hayek's saying in his book, The Fatal Conceit: The Errors of Socialism.
"The curious task of economics is to demonstrate to men how little they really know about what they imagine they can design. To the naive mind that can conceive of order only as the product of deliberate arrangement, it may seem absurd that in complex conditions order, and adaptation to the unknown, can be achieved more effectively by decentralising decisions and that a division of authority will actually extend the possibility of overall order. Yet that decentralisation actually leads to more information being taken into account."
The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step. Starting a new country comes from a million individual voluntary actions toward one goal. We all have something to contribute to making the world we want and the next generation want to live. Let's start from here right now.
It starts with a dream.
I overheard their conversations.
They plan to erase all the evidence that the NS1729 country ever existed.
Who are they?
I don't have time to figure out this question.
Everything is stored in the cloud, and all I need to do is retrieve the data on chains.
Sitting in the dark corner with a shimmering light reflected on my face, I know I must hurry up.
"Who are you?"
They appear in front of me from nowhere.
I haven't had a chance to answer.
They smash my computer and shot me in the head.

They smash my computer and shot me in the head.
"Ahhh!" I roused from sleep with a heavy breath.
Thank God! That was a dream.
I asked Alexa to draw the curtain.
Alexa didn't respond.
"Alexa, what time is it?"
Alexa didn't answer.
I pulled off my eye mask and climbed out of my bed.
I was fumbling around in the darkness and walking towards the window.
I pulled the curtain back. Completely dark outside.
"What's going on? Where are the lights?"
The full moon and scattered stars were my only light source.
I groped to the living room and turned on my mobile phone.
A red out-of-power sign.
I grabbed my computer and opened it.
17% battery. No WIFI connection. 12:19 am.
"Who cut off the power?"
I lighted the candle and walked with it to the doorway.
Deadly silence.
I could only hear my breath and the sound of a burning candle.

I had an urge from inside to scream, but the sweet soothing lavender smell from the candle calmed me down.
I didn't want to disturb my neighbours at midnight to wake them up.
My rational mind told me to go back to sleep. Everything would be fine by tomorrow.
But the voice in my head kept telling me, hey, something is wrong. You need to find out.
I summoned up the courage and pushed every neighbour's doorbell.
Nothing happened.
I started to knock on their doors.
A few minutes passed by.
Out of four doors, just one opened.
"Who are you?"
A guy robbed his sleepy eyes and asked me in an impatient tone.
I got an electric shock inside my body because his voice sounded exactly like THEY in my dream.
"What do you want?"
He got slightly angry when he noticed I didn't answer his question but stood there like a zombie.
I pulled myself together, told him I was his neighbour and asked if he noticed the power outage.
He said yes, that's why it took him a while to open the door because he couldn't see anything.
I asked him if I could borrow his phone to call my friends.
He showed me no signal. 19% battery left.
He seemed not worried about what happened and wanted to go back to sleep.
I thanked him and thought I should do the same, going back to sleep and waiting for tomorrow's sunlight.
While my neighbour walked back to his room and was about to close his door, I caught a glimpse of bright light in his background.
The same kind of computer light appeared in my dream.
"BANG." The door shut in front of me. The airflow blew out my candle.
My spiderman sense once again warned me there was something unusual.
I shook my head, slowly walked back to my apartment, and lay on my bed.
The voice still urged me to explore what happened in this world.
"SHUT THE F*** UP!"
I screamed out of fear and tried to go back to sleep.

Rays of sunshine woke me up.
"Alexa, what time is it?"
No answers.
I got up and opened the window and looked down.
Many people gathered around on the street.
Some tried to start their Teslas. Some were talking with each other.
I opened my computer to check the time.
7.29 am. 12% battery.
I walked from my 29th-floor apartment to the street below and joined the conversation.
It was a memorable scene in the residents here who hardly talked to each other in real life suddenly banding together.
No one seemed to know what happened and how long this power outage would last.
In my 27 years of life, I only encountered a power outage once.
That's when I lost my parents and my country Zeatuna.
A surprising winter storm plunged my country's electrical grid into darkness, leading to a few months-long blackouts.
It left millions of people without power in freezing temperatures. People died from cold, starvation, lack of water and social disruption.
The official record of that disaster blackout lasted for 129 days, but some people remember it's longer than that.
Everyone rushed into the CBD area's concrete buildings because it was too cold to stay in the traditional wood-made houses. People started to collect as much food as possible from grocery shops and supermarkets.
When all people desire the same scarcity, there will be blood.

Many days passed. Many bodies were scattered along the streets.
My last memory of my parents was they put me into a safe warehouse and asked me to hide from the crowd, and then they carried guns and walked out to hunt for food.
Many days passed. The other kids and I were found by a group of people in military uniforms. They told us United Nations sent them to investigate what happened to my country, and out of millions of citizens, we were probably the only survivors.
Even those military guys who have seen a lot of brutal war scenes were shocked by what they saw in my country. I could tell from their expressions.
That's the last memory I had of my country before I stepped on the rescue aircraft: âCorpses, blood, darkness, mess, tears, tanks, bombs, wounded land...

My country Zeatuna is an island located in the far south of the earth and isolated from other continents.
The steep mountain slopes, endless golden sand beaches, mangrove forests, raging rivers and lakes and thunderous waterfalls attracted niche tourists from all over the world.
Tourism used to be the No.1 source for our local economy, but a global pandemic changed everything.
The Premier Minister of Zeatuna ordered to shut down the border to suppress the virus. Without upcoming tourists and inward migration, locals suffered from economic collapse.
A couple of on the brink of bankruptcy entrepreneurs in tourism didn't sit on the fence and wait for the solution. They heard about Bitcoin and blockchain, so they crowdfunding a couple of hydroelectric power plants to venture into hosting digital mining computers.
Their efforts paid well and got attention from international cryptocurrency miners who are looking for clean, cheap energy and a stable internet connection. Zeatuna is soon becoming one of the few countries that benefit from the pandemic to achieve digital transformation.
Zeatuna, my beloved country, has been put on the map, especially among the web3 communities. The blooming development lasted for a decade, and one day, nature mama showed her power to human beings who damaged her skin for profit. She brought a once-in-hundreds years snowstorm to my country and destroyed everything.
Our nation almost went to extinction. Our land had suffered from the civil riots and over-development.
What left? Just a bunch of underaged orphans who had zero real-life experience but spent the majority of their life online.

After mammoth discussions, the UN passed an agreement to certify the surviving Zeatunese kids co-own the land of Zeatuna. Since our country was not in a livable condition at that moment and we were too young to co-decide the country's future. The solution was to wait for all of us to reach the legal voting age and decide what we would do with the land.
We became the most exciting reality TV show in human history. People are eager to follow our journey and to see the fate of 79 surviving Zeatunese kids between 2- 17 years old. At least the world must wait for 19 years until the youngest one grows up to see the season finale.
While the UN was busy making the arrangement, numerous bitcoin and blockchain communities who used my country's mining services aided us with humanitarian relief. They either volunteered to clean up the bodies and repair the building or proposed to be our foster family.
Back then, there was a new form of a country built by a highly aligned online community with a capacity for collective action. NS1729 was the most successful one with hundreds and thousands of members worldwide. It reached the stage of crowdfunding territory to eventually gains diplomatic recognition from pre-existing states.
My assigned foster family was part of the NS1729 community. So did many other Zeatunese kids' families. Some mainstream journalists came up with the conspiracy theory that NS1729 would like to take over Zeatuna as their physical territory. The best way was to raise Zeatunese kids up and subliminally influence their decisions to sell our land to them.
I was too young to understand that theory. All I cared about was having a safe place to live. Although the UN took the witness protection act to protect our identity, we had nowhere to hide in the world of citizen journalism. One by one, we were adopted to our new family and the oldest girl among us, N, proposed we have the reunion yearly at Zeatuna.
She also set up the discord channel for us and ensured our new family would let us stay in touch with each other. I looked upon N since I was a little girl, and I learned how to code, write, and draw from her because our families were very close.
Her parents went out hunting for food with my parents on the same day. I stayed with her the whole time, waiting for them to come back with food, but they didn't make it.
N went out to look for them. A couple of days later, she returned with some familiar shredded cloth.
"They're gone, S. The bomb."
I was too hungry and tired to cry out loud, just letting tears flow down my face.
"S, stay strong. You'll be fine. Never forget me and our country. We'll get back home together one day."
N farewelled me and left with her foster family.

Through all those years, we didn't get the annual reunion as N proposed. Coordinating 79 families to go to one place every year is challenging. Some kids developed PTSD and followed the psychiatric advice to completely cut their ties with Zeatuna to embrace their new life.
As time went by, around 20 of us were actively seeking to go back to Zeatuna to rebuild our country. Most are of N's age and already had state nationalism education before the catastrophe.
I never felt a sense of belonging to Zeatuna. I was born in the fast development stage of building hydroelectric power plants. All my memory about Zeatuna was fewer green lands and forests but more construction sites.
If there were not that storm, my parents and I would immigrate to other countries the following spring. However, changes always happen faster than planned. You never know whether you can see the sunlight of tomorrow or not.

Two days before my 21st birthday, my neighbourhood has already been surrounded by many journalists and influencers. As per the agreement, when Zeatuna kids turn to 21st, they can leave their guardians and pursue their own path.
The world wants to know my destiny. After all, people have been following me on this Reality TV show for 12 years.
Since I grew up with my foster family, followed by many interviews and paparazzi. I developed an interest in journalism and writing. I always have the urge to write my own story and seek the truth. I also enjoyed hearing my new parents talk about decentralised media and the new form of a country they are building.
Many other network unions also emerged because more and more people tasted the freedom of being sovereign individuals under the trend of digital nomads and remote working. They rebel against the exited order and devote themselves to building new aligned online communities and then seek physical lands.
Zeatuna has become a popular place for those online communities to settle down as a new physical territory for its unique situation: power plants, natural resources, already recognised by the UN as a country.
Whoever can negotiate with the future leader of Zeatuna to purchase the land will win the race of being the first Network State.
NS1729 has become the target of pre-existing states and other network unions in those years. The formers are afraid of this new kind of country protocol. Once it's successful, there will be more to come.
The laters treated NS1729 as a competitor. Although they used to learn from NS1729's pioneer experiences, now every society and union wants to be the FIRST in the world to prove the feasibility of building the Network State raised by an anonymous person.

On my birthday, I fared well with my foster parents and returned to Zeatuna to reunite with others. It was the first time in 12 years I set my footprint up in my homeland. Everything has changed dramatically.
My hometown has become a better version of Chornobyl, abandoned by human beings but revived as one of the world's largest nature reserves and the ecosystem.
In a way, the Zeatuna disaster reveals the true extent of the human impact on the planet's environment. Despite the damage caused by the snowstorm, it has done far less damage to local ecosystems than human development. In expelling humankind from the area, mama nature recovered from herself.
Out of 79 kids who survived the catastrophe, 2 dead from accidents, 27 gave up their citizenship, and 29 lost touch. The left 21 kids, including me, are actively in our online community. I was the 17th to reach the age to get back, and we still had to wait 7 years for the rest to grow up and make the final vote.
But I already knew the result. N was the natural-born leader, and she had been prepared for herself to be the governor of the New Zeatuna. And, of course, she would get all our votes. The question is, what's next? How can she rebuild our country, revitalise the economy and form a new national consciousness?
N told me she had a perfect plan. She'd like to have me onboard to execute her plan and serve as her assistant.
I agreed. I wanted to cover N's story and record New Zeatuna's story first-hand.
Things were more complicated than I thought, and I was shocked by her plan and⦠her dark side.
Will you do anything by all means necessary to achieve your goal?
N would definitely say yes.

I went back to my apartment after chatting with people on the street. The strange unease feeling came back again. And the nightmare replayed again and again in my head.
"What's s going on with my mind?"
Maybe the power outage triggered my childhood trauma?
I shook my head and tried to think about what shall I do in the day without the internet.
Nothing.
I couldn't talk with friends and ask them about their situation, and I couldn't go to their places without GPS and a car.
My only hope is to pray for bringing the power back.
But who shall I pray to?
We now live in this decentralised digital society and take all those established infrastructures for granted.
We never know who we shall talk to if one day we run out of water or power because it's never happened in most people's lives.
I was meditating on the floor with many questions aroused in my mind.
"How come people didn't learn the lessons from Zeatuna to prepare for a power outage?"
"Why didn't Zuatunese and I take the initiative to educate the world on how to deal with the cascading damaging effects of a long-term power outage?"
"What if the Zeatuna tragedy would happen again?"
I broke out in cold sweat and got up to grab a drink.
Nothing left much in my fridge. Shall I prepare for the worst and get some food?
Since we are already in a cashless society, with the blackout, how shall I pay for things?
I went downstairs again and saw people were already in a panic.
Many people started to gather outside the supermarket and attempted to break in to grab food and water.
I was trembling in the crowd.
NOT AGAIN. NO.
However, nothing is under my control.
The riot happened at night, and history repeated itself. Once again, I stood alone in fires, but this time without parents or friends to protect me.

The chaos lasted for three days, and the power suddenly went back.
When the street lights sparkled up one by one, the whole neighbourhood had a thunderous round of applause with fireworks lighting up the sky like we were welcoming the New Year.
Everything seems back to normal pretty quickly once people can coordinate and chat online.
I read the news that this power outage was from a cyber attack.
"Cyber attack?"
I immediately opened Discord and found the NS1729 server was gone.
"Shit!"
I grabbed my phone and tried to call my foster family, but their information all disappeared.
I googled NS1729. The results were nothing related to the first Network State but some random products.
I rushed out of my apartment and knocked on my neighbour's door.
"Maybe it's my end of the problem. Let me try other computers."
No one answered. I kept knocking and knocking, but still, no one answered.
I ran back to my apartment and tried to retrieve data, and then I heard my neighbour's door open.
The guy walked out like he hadn't been sleepy for many days.
"May I use your computer to search for something?"
"For what?"
"Can you please search NS1729 for me? Very important, please!"
I begged him and his eyes suddenly sprinkled some lights.
The guy went back home and walked into my apartment with his computer.
The same results. Nothing related to the Network State.
"What are you doing?"
He asked me.
"Retrieving data to prove their existence."
"Oh? Can you?"
I felt something against my back head. I turned around and saw the guy pointing a gun at me.
"Traitor."

Here is N's plan.
Once she becomes the voted leader of Zeatuna, she'll make a deal with NS1729, sell our land to them, and let them rebuild the country for us because they have much better resources.
When the time is right, she'll take all those tech-savvy Zeatunese to start a cyber attack, erase all the data related to her deal with the NS1729 and get the country back to her hand.
I was shocked by her crazy thoughts and left Zeatuna. I couldn't spread her plan to the world because she was like my sister. On the other hand, I warned my parents to pay attention to cyber attacks, and I never knew whether they made it into mind.
Since almost all the world's information is stored digitally on the cloud, it's easy to use the money from selling the land to arrange and recruit labourers to destroy the servers or interrupt the server maintenance and management.
Human memories are short, but history written by the winner will forever live along as long as humans existed.
When Emperor Qin set fire to burn books and burying of scholars in 213 BC, the Chinese people lost track of what exactly happened before Qin's ages.
When N called for the cyber attack to destroy servers and data in 48 AS, future generations will never know Network States' founding members' stories.
Though we have the technology to record everything on chains and make microhistory more powerful than in previous ages, we human beings could not escape the law of physics to avoid falling into the digital dark age.
I closed my eyes in peace.
I did my part to write my own history. Though short and simple, truthful and matters.

Recently, I read Zane Austen's article Sovereign Unicorns: Jiaolong, A $1 Billion Private City in China. He introduced Jiaolong, a private enterprise that has built a private city in China from scratch in just a few years, with $3.2 billion annually in GDP and 120,000 citizens now.
Sounds impressive, isn't it?
Ever since the Chinese economic reform, hundreds of new models of developing villages, towns and cities have sprung up like mushrooms in this land of miracles. We heard about the fast growth of tier-one cities like Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou and Shenzhen, and we might not be familiar with hundreds of other examples like Jiaolong.
Here are three stories of small Chinese villages from which we might get inspiration and learn lessons to build a startup society.

Caoxian County: $8 billion in e-commerce transactions in one year with 200,000 entrepreneurs
Most mainland Chinese never heard about Caoxian until a local online influencer shared a funny video on Douyin (Chinese TikTok). The video immediately went viral with 860 million views.
Initially, people thought the online influencer's local accent and content were funny. And then, they realise that this tiny small town supplies more than 90% of the coffin in Japan and shares one-third of China's entertainment and cosplay production.
In 2019, more than 55,000 online stores and 200,000 dedicated e-commerce entrepreneurs in Caoxian contributed 51.6 billion RMB (8 billion USD) in e-commerce transactions.
The governor of Caoxian ran a live streaming e-commerce channel to help sell costumes for her village. Her fame brought her 3,000 clothes record-sale in half an hour. The continuous success attracted 50,000 talents to return to their hometown to run online businesses.
While Americans are exiting San Francisco to pursue more livable places under the Great Resignation and remote working trend, the same situation of Exiting Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou is happening in China. Caoxian County is a good case study of how an unknown small town can compete with big cities with digital transformation.

Huaxi Village: The rise and fall of the "richest village in China"
Huaxi Village was founded in 1961 and claimed to be the "Number One Village Under The Sky". When Deng Xiaoping announced China's reform and opening policy, the village leader seized the opportunity to develop its iron and steel industry and achieved rapid growth.
In the early 21st century, there were over 100 companies under the Huaxi Group, including iron and steel, tobacco, and real estate. Later, Huaxi Group began to get involved in banking, securities, and insurance, purchased shares from multiple listed companies and expanded the business into emerging markets such as online games and e-sports.
By 2004, the average annual income of villagers had reportedly reached over 122,000 yuan ($18,000), forty times that of most farmers in China. Two thousand villagers have lived in 400-600 square meters villas, had 1- 5 million yuan deposits in the bank and 1-3 cars per household, and enjoyed generous social welfare schemes. Huanxi Village was all over the press and regarded as the wealthiest village in China.
However, after the village leader Wu Renbao died in 2013 and his son took over, the village's economic takeoff appears to have crash-landed. Soon, Wu's four sons and their relatives took over Huaxi Group's major position and controlled the finance. Last year, Huanxi Group reported that the village had gone into 6 billion USD in debt. Hundreds and thousands of migrant workers had no share in the above benefits as villagers had and just left.
How Huaxi Village could find a sustainable development path to go through the credit crisis and brain drain problem is undoubtedly worth watching.

Jiuxing Village: The first "Market Village in China" with all villagers as shareholders
At the early stage of China's reform and opening up, Jiuxing was a typical rural village: remote location, inconvenient transportation and in extreme poverty. In 1994, the village leader Wu Enfu proposed to build a farmers' market in Jiuxing because the only advantage of this village was its location: within the outer ring of Shanghai, where he could call for villagers to serve Shanghai people's needs.
At that time, Wu Enfu calculated the project's estimated cost of about 970,000 yuan ($144,000). However, no one would like to invest in this poor village with a debt of 17.8 million yuan ($2.63 million). Wu Enfu lobbied everywhere and finally persuaded a company where his friend's daughter worked to lend him 1 million yuan.
In 1995, Jiuxing Farmers Market was officially opened and attracted many neighbourhood buyers to purchase agriculture products, domestic food, hardware and construction materials. Within one year, Jiuxing paid off its debt and started to expand in scale. Wu's strategy was to turn every villager into shareholders and get involved in the fast-growing phase of village development.
In 2021, Jiuxing became the largest building materials and home furniture trade centre, thanks to its unique location and hardworking villagers. Nowadays, the village has nurtured more than 500 multi-millionaires and more than 4,000 business owners with over 30 billion yuan ($4.44 billion) in annual transactions.

Summary
A network state is a social network with a moral innovation, a sense of national consciousness, a recognized founder, a capacity for collective action, an in-person level of civility, an integrated cryptocurrency, a consensual government limited by a social smart contract, an archipelago of crowdfunded physical territories, a virtual capital, and an on-chain census that proves a large enough population, income, and real-estate footprint to attain a measure of diplomatic recognition.
Balaji Srinivasan, The Network State
The above case studies are certainly not a network state or startup society, but they provide a few lessons for us to learn about the importance of digital transformation, a recognised founder and a capacity for collective actions.
As the article I shared at the beginning said, those unknown case studies "pioneer a shared-sovereignty model where the state and entrepreneurs are not pitted together but work in tandem to create new cities, and eventually, new countries".
We gain new perspectives through learning from others' success or failure stories. I'm looking forward to participating and watching those startup society protocols grow and develop in the near future!

- 《Your Music and People》写给创作者的哲思小书,教会你艺术家的生活也不需要低头妥协。
-《How to Live》

这周终于读完了Balaji Srinivasan的新书《网络国家 The Network State》!

We heard so many times that web3 is all about COMMUNITY.
But how many communities or DAOs have you participated in that provide a true sense of belonging?
I was with more than ten DAOs and the online community's discord channels early last year. On the one hand, I was bombarded with hundreds of messages from some servers. On the other hand, I felt pity for the deadly silence from other channels.
In the age of attention economy, time and energy are my social currency. It's unrealistic for me to read every message and announcement or attend every community call and town hall meeting. I also don't want to be in a community where it's good to be there, but I have nothing to contribute to and rarely know anybody.
So I exited most of them and started focusing on a few. 1729 community is one of the good examples where I could share my skillsets and meet like-minded people simultaneously. Members (1729ers) are tech-savvy people who seek truth, health and wealth and build the Network State together.
Currently, 1729ers are focusing on reading Balaji Srinivasan's new book The Network State, which emphasises the importance of community building.

"... you need a strong community to even have a chance of building a network state. Twitter at large is not it, Google Inc is not it, Bitcoin is not it --- these lack either a single self-conscious nation, a functional state, or both.
A political party is closer. A very tight-knit NFT community or influencer/CEO following is even closer. To get on the path to network states, they would first build digital strength via the network union, then add physical territory via the network archipelago, and then gain diplomatic recognition in a true network state."
Balaji Srinivasan, The Network State
Since I have spent most of my career in content creation and social media community management, I'd like to share some learnings and challenges about community building. I'll use CY Circle, my experimental community, as an example to showcase how I combined theories into practice.
Before I start, here is some background information.
I started CY Circle one year ago, where I offer paid members exclusive content and the opportunity to chat with me. I also added POAP elements to the Discord channel so the paid members can verify themselves to access private categories and online activities.
Based on the current data (300+ members and 70+ paid members), most audiences are Chinese people who have overseas experience or live overseas and are interested in technology, finance and self-actualisation. They have a similar path as me, which reveals the golden role in content creation that serves the person you used to be, and you will find followers.

Community Building Roadmap
1. Discover and define the community
- Set up mission and vision
- Understand the audience's pain points
- Answer the question why they want to join
- Research a host platform where community members like to hangout
- Share your story to attract early adopters
2. Create a valuable onboarding experience
- Build a landing page and pick up a host platform
- Have a clear onboarding communications
- Start with a small scale call or cohort to welcome and introduce new members
- Create a membership directory (name, location, profession, expertise) and let them connect organically
3. Encourage active participation
- Produce/share quality content in a consistent way
- Nurture active contributors with rewards (NFTs or development opportunities)
- Create community rituals (regular updates and events)
- Celebrate small and big wins
- Send swag or merch
4. Improve and grow
- Measure community health metrics (growth, churn, post/comment activity, how is community impacting your business or personal brand)
- Collate feedback regularly (poll, survey, 1:1 conversation)
Here is a one-page example from CY Circle.
Prosperous Community vs Unsuccessful Community

Lessons Learned
As David Spinks said, all community management boils down to:
Here are a few learnings based on my experiences with scaling many communities from scratch to hundreds and thousands of members:
- Facilitation: proactively motivating members to connect and participate
- Moderation: reactively responding, keeping order and managing conflict
- Measurement: collecting insight to understand community health and impact.
Here are a few learnings based on my experiences with scaling many communities from scratch to hundreds and thousands of members:
1. Focus on relationship-building
Getting to know every community member takes time, but it is worth it. I met 90% of my friends online, especially from the online community I hosted or joined.
Human beings are social animals and need a sense of belonging. By building meaningful interactions with community members, I gain energy and ideas. At the same time, they have a place to meet like-minded people and connect with me and each other.
It's not a good growth marketing advice but in a long run, it works well.

2. Provide opportunities for members
I like to test new initiatives, run new experiments with community members and provide career development opportunities to them.
Recent examples are helping two Chinese overseas students get internship opportunities and initiating a translation project to spread thoughtful ideas to Chinese readers.
I also seek to collaborate with community members on co-creating arts and stories inspired by those examples. As Balaji mentioned in his book, "The collective action is key for building organizational muscle".
3. Have an efficient administration and moderation
With the help of technology (bots on Discord) and mature onboarding experience (automatic onboarding emails and event schedule software), I can focus entirely on building relationships and enabling quality connections and less on logistics.
I'm experimenting with smart contracts and community tokens at the moment, enabling efficient and transparent community governance.

4. Create community rituals
I send a monthly community newsletter to update on what's happening in the community, top resources and content created, members' highlights and major updates from my life.
This month marks 1st birthday of my community, so I tested the first online gathering with community members. It went pretty well, so I'll make it a regular event to gather people around and share valuable tips.
5. Be transparent and seek support
As a creator with 200,000+ followers across the channel, I thought building a community would be an easy task for me. NOT EXACTLY. It's hard to convince people from web2 platforms to my own space because of user habits and attention span.
Over the year, my convention rate of turning followers into hardcore fans has been low with many challenges. However, I'm open to talking about that with my community members and sometimes, I get emotional and technical support from those early adopters.
I don't need to be the perfect creator who only shares high moments of my life, and I have a safe space to show my vulnerability and get back to those who genuinely believe in my mission and vision to make the change.â

Look into the future
"Technology has allowed us to start new companies, new communities, and new currencies. But can we use it to create new cities, or even new countries? A key concept is to go cloud first, land last -- but not land never -- by starting with an online community and then materializing it into the physical world."
"As discussed earlier, don't go around saying that you're starting a network state. Say that you're starting a network union, and build up a community that's capable of doing collective actions online. Then crowdfund territory and turn your online community into a network archipelago with physical presence. Finally, if all the stars align, gain diplomatic recognition and then declare your society a network state. I know this might seem a bit like the Marxist insistence on the difference between socialism and communism, but the counterpoint is that nations have acquired land and gained diplomatic recognition before -- and we note that it's important when they do. They just haven't done it in quite this way, with this progression. That's why we want separate terms for network union, network archipelago, and network state."
Balaji Srinivasan, The Network State
As the saying goes, a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. The Network State starts with the startup society. And startup society begins with an online community, where everyone has a moral premise at a core (One Commandment) to generate mutual values between the community and members.
I have taken the first step to building my community as a creator. The next step is to turn my online community into a network archipelago, replete with other creators worldwide, organizing people to start doing things together with aligned purposes.
I hope to see more content creators leverage their influence and skills to build online communities. Let's pave the foundations of building the Network States from today!

最近BookCoin又开始玩Read to earn模式,读者购买NFT之后可以在线阅读经典小说《The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde》,通过回答一系列和书籍内容有关的问题后,有机会获得限量版的NFT。

3. 也许后世会将这一年看作是13 AS(After Satoshi),而不是我们现在正在使用的2022 AD(拉丁文Anno Domini 的缩写,公元纪年)。
你会像蜥蜴一样重新苏醒;
大家说它是用大理石建造;

They call me buddha girl with an AK47 in Aveiro.
One moment I sit there working and meditating, calm and in peace.
Next minute I unleash my inner wilderness, dancing and singing like nobody is watching.
Five months of living in Aveiro is serendipitous and surreal to me. Tourists often consider here a Portuguese Venice for its canals, traditional boats (moliceiro) and unique natural landscapes.
But to me, I consider Aveiro as the salt city, as most locals do, because my grandfather was born in Salt City (盐城, Yan Cheng) in China. And watching the sunset at the Aveiro salt pans is one of my favourite activities, and I felt a subtle connection with the name and sentimental sense.
My story with Aveiro started with a random encounter in Madeira. I met a Chinese digital nomad in Madeira who introduced me to using Workaway to find my next destination. I registered, browsed around, and found VIC Aveiro Art House stand out from other places for its multiple functionalities as the art centre, guest house and label brand.
I messaged the owner and art director, Hugo Branco. Soon, I received his email to find someone with my skill set and professional background to help them with marketing and communications. So I made my trip to Aveiro, a place I had never heard about.
When I arrived at this historical Art House, I noticed two Maori mascots at the door’s entry. As a Chinese Kiwi, I hardly find any NZ elements in Portugal. The feeling of seeing something connected with home was elastic! After all, it’s been over three years since I left Aotearoa.
Hugo explained that his grandfather Vasco Branco was involved in various arts, especially in ceramic, painting, cinema and literature, winning numerous awards worldwide, including a couple of trophies from the New Zealand Film Association.
Vasco Branco, a prolific polymath artist, was honoured as a legend in Aveiro. If you walk along the streets and lanes here, you can find many ceramic installations and art projects he left that became beautiful landmarks in this city.
Talking with Hugo about his grandfather reminded me of my grandpa Qi Kaimin, a scholar and artist from China. Both our grandfathers made achievements in arts and literature and suffered from Alzheimer’s disease in their late years. Another connection between Aveiro and me that I didn’t expect.
When I arrived, an Argentina musician Santi Lesca also landed to help Hugo with the upcoming music projects. Hugo took us to tour around a house, and I was amazed by this legacy house his grandfather left for him — a gallery, secret cinema, art studio, guest houses and countless art pieces from corner to corner.
While walking around the house, I kept thinking about my grandpa, who left many books, poems and memories to my family, guided me through my life, and set up the foundation of my roots. I miss him so much, and I understand Hugo’s vision to develop this house in his grandfather’s name.
Not long after Santi and I settled down, we started to plan the VAGA Festival, the first unclassifiable music festival in Portugal. Working with Santi was blissful because his energy and devotion to music and life constantly impacted me. His knowledge of Yi Jing and Dao De Jing impressed me the most. He made a music installation that combined Yi Jing’s philosophy with the Dart Game to tell oracles, which was super successful at the music festival.
Santi’s Argentina background brought me back to a miracle time while I was travelling in Buenos Aires. Back then, I was in a toxic relationship and tired of my corporate job. I didn’t realise how depressed I was until my body broke down with a panic attack. I escaped to Argentina to learn Tango dance under the influence of Wong Kar-wai’s movie, Happy Together and Tim Ferriss’ story about his Argentina life.
When I connected my mind and body with intense and emotional dancing moves, I started to get a clear vision to save my life. I broke up with my boyfriend when I returned from Argentina and felt the urge to leave New Zealand to pursue my literature dream.
It took me another ten months to quit my fat-salary job in the corporate finance world. Once I got enough savings to prepare for my upcoming uncertain life, I left immediately. I could still taste the freedom of the moment I jumped out of the successful life with a stable job and a beautiful place to live. So I purchased a one-way ticket to London.
However, my new life didn’t go as planned due to the global pandemic, but it rewarded me with a large chunk of solitude. Since I lived near Hyde Park, I had the lifestyle of Henry David Thoreau in Walden, walking, writing, and living with nature as a daily routine.
Living in a foreign country as a newcomer during a pandemic sounds challenging. Still, I followed my interest to visit writers, poets and artist residencies, watched a couple of football games live in stadiums, and published one memoir and novella during the lockdown.
After living in England for more than two years, my itchy foot led me to go on the road again and started to seek my next destination. Portugal popped into my mind because
1) it’s the first choice of the digital nomad;
2) my favourite writer Fernando Pessoa’s home country;
3) my birthday was the exact date when Macao returned from Portugal to China (a subtle connection between my Chinese root and Portugal);
4) one of my online friends I admired mentioned he’d move there soon.
So, that’s how everything started, and I ended up in Portugal.
Training with Madeira Fitness Friends, attending regular Purple Friday at the digital nomad village, hiking between two peaks, swimming in the Atlantic sea, embracing the first sunrise of 2022 on a boat, experience a profound psychedelic trip in the forest, celebrating Christmas and birthday with Portuguese friends, dealing with countless paperwork with SEF, and finally having a base in Lisbon.
Now I’m settling in Portugal, though I have no idea how long this settle-down will last with my serious commitment issue. I want to listen to my therapist’s suggestion to forget about all my backup options, behave like this is the only country I can stay in, and try to attend regular meet-ups with a fixed group of people to deepen my relationships. Never quit or escape because of stupid reasons like the road is dirty, I’m moving away, or this friend uses an odd perfume, I don’t want to talk to her anymore etc.
Here I am, waiting for a flight to Madeira to revisit those lovely people I encountered on this magical island. I started to realise once I reached out to a certain point to experience the width of life, now it’s time to dig deep into the length of human relationships.
As a person with thousands of masks, including contradicted identities like buddha girl and Chinese snipper, I’m still on the road to exploring my identity and finding a group of soulmate-ish friends to walk the journey together.
Portugal treats me well with its open-minded and friendly environment and gains the power to attract digital nomads and remote workers worldwide. I’m here to stay, to create, to stick around with friends and if I’m lucky enough, maybe form a family.
This is not a typical giving-tips post of a digital nomad living in a foreign country but an honest reflection on my journey to settling down here. And last but not least, as a retired ex-food/travel blogger, I do have tips to share to make your Portugal life more colourful. Enjoy!
